Overview
The National Women Commission (NWC) is a constitutional body of federal Nepal, established under the National Women Commission Act, 2074 and Regulations, 2078. Its primary aim is to promote and protect women’s rights and eliminate all forms of gender inequality, as envisioned by the Constitution of Nepal, 2072. Since its inception, the Commission has actively worked to empower women by safeguarding their rights, interests, and entitlements, and eliminating discrimination to ensure gender equality and justice nationwide. The Commission is mandated to study, examine, and report on the effectiveness of policies and programs related to women’s rights and make recommendations to the government for their implementation.
NWC realized the need for a rigorous, scientific and evidence-based research study in the area of inclusive decision making at local level governments. Recognizing this need, NWC entrusted NASC to conduct a research study on the topic “Influence of Female Deputy Mayors in Decision Making at Local Governments of Koshi Province: Unraveling Roles, Participation, and Challenges”. In this connection, NASC undertook this study and explored the role and actual influence of female deputy mayors in decision-making at the local governments of Koshi Province adopting the qualitative research design. The study further unraveled the complexities surrounding the roles and participation of female deputy mayors encapsulating their lived experiences. The study contributed to the broader discourse on women's leadership and provided valuable insights in creating a more supportive environment for women in leadership positions, ensuring their active and meaningful participation in local governance of Federal Nepal
